Before the Dawn

Synopsis

Constable Fredrick Wilson wakes, naked, in a dingy motel room with no memory of what happened the previous night. Eventually, the memory of a frantic call from his old high school girlfriend and the urgent drive to the hotel room in the next town over comes to him. However, the moments from the time he knocks on her door up until just before dawn are missing. And before he has the chance to collect his thoughts, the police break down the hotel room door and arrest him for the murder of a girl he hasn't seen for over a decade.

Nathan Turner, an award-winning Investigative reporter, receives an urgent call from Gabrielle, his girlfriend, who is currently visiting her sick mother in their hometown of Clarkston. The wife of Constable Wilson has contacted her for help with his defence. She fears that her husband will be unfairly treated in the town where he was once the only Indigenous police officer. Nathan understands how country towns can be narrow-minded and unjust after being falsely accused of the disappearance of his high school best friend when he was just fourteen — and he's not a First Nation's police constable where the local community are ready and willing for their ingrained bias and bigotry to be affirmed….

Even before his first day back in his hometown is over, Nathan senses there is something greater underpinning Fredrick's arrest, something that has been at least a decade, if not a century, in the making. And it soon becomes apparent to him that powerful people are lurking in the shadows who will stop at nothing to keep their secrets hidden.
